OSI Group has the Potential to Become the Leading Food Supplier Globally

In one century, many businesses have come and gone but one has stood the test of time to become a leading food processing company. It boasts of having over 60 facilities in 17 nations with a staff of more 20,000 employees. This company started from scratch and thanks to the dedication of the founding family it grew steadily into an international business by the name of OSI Group.

Background Information

OSI Group began as a small butcher shop in Oak Park, Chicago in 1909. It was established by Otto Kolchowsky, a German immigrant. Within a decade, the business developed into a wholesale butchery, and relocated to Maywood. Success followed Otto’s business and in 1928, it was rebranded to Otto & Sons. After the World War One, there was a rapid economic expansion that brought about the launch of many businesses across the nation including McDonald’s restaurant in 1955. The restaurant was founded by Ray Kroc who entered into an informal agreement with Otto’s sons, Harry and Arthur, to be the first fresh ground beef supplier. As McDonald took off, so did Otto & Sons. It continued to supply the growing number of McDonald’s restaurants and with this demand it increased its facilities.

Technological Advancements and Changes

In the 1960s, flash-freezing was discovered. Thereafter, Otto & Sons quickly adapted to the technology. Flash-freezing is the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze foods promptly. This technology saw Otto & Sons’ production skyrocket with the reduction in costs that came with it. The business eventually became McDonald’s top supplier beating over a hundred other suppliers. The company built its first state-of-the-art facility dedicated to McDonalds in Illinois. The facility had flash-freezing machinery that froze hamburger patties. Later on, the other aspects of the business that did not serve McDonalds were gathered into Glenmark brand which catered for the needs of local retail markets and restaurants. In 1975, after almost 70 years of operation, Otto & Sons transitioned to OSI Industries. The leadership also changed from the Kolchowskys who were nearing retirement, to Sheldon Lavin. A Century of Innovation at OSI Group.

OSI Group opened its first facility outside Chicago in 1977 in West Jordan. Afterward, more facilities sprouted up in North America. When McDonalds broke into the global market, OSI Group did too. It established a venture in Germany and another in Spain in 1978 and 1980 respectively. Sheldon Lavin became CEO and chairman of the OSI Group company and spearheaded the expansion of OSI internationally, into Europe and Asia. Recently, it acquired a plant owned by Tyson Foods and also purchased Baho foods but continued its operation under OSI.

The outline

OSI Group has been a recipient of many awards as a result of its exemplary leadership. It has an admirable portfolio, and with its excellent leadership, it is bound to become the most significant food supplier in the international market.

The management and staff of Baho will remain as they are. Baho products complement OSI products to a great extent. Baho is, indeed a perfect match because they seem to operate using the same business model as OSI Industries. Their values also converge especially with regard to quality of the products that they offer.

OSI Group: The Leaders In The Meat Processing Industry

When it comes to the processed meat industry in America, there is a name that stands out as compared to all the others in the industry. That name is OSI Group. OSI has had a long history and has been in the business of processing food and meats since the early 1900s. The company had its humble roots in a simple butcher shop that sold high-quality beef. Otto Kolschowsky, the founder of OSI, had just come to the United States from Germany and was ready to live out his American dream. The company expanded into the wholesale meat sector in 1917 and began supplying meats to restaurants and eateries in the state. Today, the company is worth billions and is considered to be an industry leader for other businesses to follow.

1955 is when the company started to make its mark in the national meat industry. This happened when Mcdonald’s was first founded as a startup, ready to enter the fast food business. The eatery had chosen OSI to supply them with their meat in select stores around the state of Illinois. A few years later, OSI managed to enter into a deal with the fast food giant, to provide them with meat to all of their outlets in America. Supplying beef to Mcdonald’s became one of the main focuses of the company, and was also what propelled their name into the meat industry.

Because of the increase in demand, the company had to continually improve conditions to ensure that they offer meat that is in keeping with their high-quality standards. OSI was the first meat processing company to correctly implement cryogenic technology to be able to keep their meat fresh and so that it could sustain the transportation that it goes through before it reaches the outlets.

Today, OSI Group does not only supply meat to restaurants in America, but all over the world. The company recently set up a manufacturing and processing unit in China, to be able to supply the McDonald’s there with quality meat. The company is ready to take on the international sphere with their expansion plans.

OSI Group currently ranks at #58 among the Fortune 500 rankings and is considered to be one of the most successful meat producing industries in the entire world. With nothing but a bright path ahead of them, OSI Group plans to move forward into a direction of sustainability and is already making plans to improve the technology and processing machinery that they use to be able to deliver the highest quality meat to its customers.

OSI Group Continues to Win Awards and Expand

OSI group is a privately owned meat packing company that helped McDonald’s get their start. The company was known from the beginning for being able to serve quality meat and was founded forty-six years before Ray Kroc shook hands with the founder’s sons. Before long, McDonald’s became their main source of income and after the invention of freezing burgers with liquid nitrogen OSI Group became one of four meat providers for the company. This allowed them to open a meat packing plant in 1973. Since then OSI Group has become a well-known name beyond the United States and continues to win awards for their innovation.

After their first factory was built in 1973, they have expanded to sixty-five facilities in seventeen countries. One of these factories is located in the United Kingdom. This factory won a Sword of Honor and Globe of Honor Awards from the British Safety Council. OSI is proud to focus on sustainability and ensuring that people around the world are safe, both in what the customers eat and in how their employees are treated at their facilities. Since they won both awards their United Kingdom facility is set apart from others. In the United States factories, one of the ways they are doing this is through remote video auditing through a third party organization called Arrowsight. Their attention to detail at each site can provide their customers with the utmost assurance that they are getting the best quality.

They got their big break from McDonald’s but the company decided to expand and now sells different foods to customers as well. In August of 2016, the company purchased Baho foods though they are still waiting on government approval. The Baho Company is Dutch and focuses on deli meats and other convenience foods. This will allow the company to continue their already explosive expansion. In 2011, they were ranked number 136 of America’s largest privately owned companies, currently they are number fifty-eight. Baho has five subsidiaries that OSI will take over, including Vital Convenience and Bakx Foods.

OSI Group started with just one immigrant turned into a world-wide name in quality and assurance. With attention to even minor details, such as how their employees are being treated, it is no wonder this company has won awards for excellence and are able to continue their growth plan.
